Children in Jamaica A true hidden treasure in Jamaica are the children. They are by FAR my favorite way to spend time there. For the most part the children I’ve met in Jamaica are not shy or quiet at all! They’re the exact opposite?.bold and outgoing. The questions that come out of their mouths are hilarious because they really just have no concept of certain things, and I expect that even though some might see plenty of white people they probably don’t interact with many. Resort in Ocho Rios I stayed at Rooms on the Beach for my first trip to Ocho Rios, and I was glad I did considering I was traveling alone. It was my fifth trip to Jamaica but I’d never been to the north coast before. This hotel would be my home for the next five nights. I had no troubles checking in at Rooms, the front desk staff was really friendly and I was even given a choice of rooms so of course I chose beach front! A porter helped me with my bags and did a little orientation of the...

See More of Jamaica I regularly surf the internet and read other peoples reviews and experiences in Jamaica.  The negative commentaries make me cringe and I wish I could call all the negative people up and tell them “if only you’d known how to handle yourself…..”.  So here it is, a post on how to leave your hotel and handle yourself out in the streets to get the best possible experience you can that day. Craft Market in Ocho Rios First of all, this post is NOT for people...

Negril Cliff Diving If you’ve ever known anyone who’s gone to Jamaica, particularly Negril, then you’ve no doubt heard of Ricks Cafe. It’s a world famous attraction and is visited by hundreds of tourists every day. Even I’ll admit on one of my 7-day trips I went to Ricks five of those days. (Okay yes, my son had a lot to do with that!) Ricks Cafe is located on West End Road in the cliffs of Negril, and its claim to fame is the cliff diving in the daytime, spectacular...

Jerk Festivals I stumbled upon the Hanover Jerk Festival by accident after meeting a couple locals in Negril. These guys I met at a nightclub one night invited me to the town of Lucea for the festival the next night. Of course I say YES! I would have never known about it otherwise, and after seeing that I was the only white person there, apparently not many tourists know about it. Lucea is about a 40 minute drive from Negril and we arrived at the festival around 11pm. It was already packed?unusual...

Jamaica’s Traditional Breakfast Jamaica’s national dish is Ackee and Saltfish.  Jamaicans say its the traditional breakfast dish but I would and do eat it anytime! Ackee is a fruit that grows on the Ackee tree, and it actually looks like a fruit when its still on the tree. Picture of ackee tree Before ackee can be cooked it needs to be picked from the tree and taken out of its pretty red skin. What’s inside doesn’t look like a fruit nor does it look the least bit appetizing....

Reggae Sumfest Review I have two words to say about Reggae Sumfest – JUST GO!!!!!!! I’ve attended Sumfest twice so far, in 2006 and 2008. They both had one major thing (and a lot of minor things) in common. The major thing – WEAR ORTHOPEDIC SHOES! Or if you don’t have any, just wear flip flops but be prepared to endure! Or bring a chair to sit on during breaks. Okay now onto all the great stuff! Reggae Sumfest is the best entertainment I’ve ever seen, next to Busta...
