Crazy Afros in Jamaica

Sunday, December 27th, 2009 | Author: JC

Once again I was going through lots of old pictures I have and found these ones that make me laugh.

In Jamaica and with black people in general, I notice how meticulous they are with their hairstyles. I think it’s awesome some of the wicked styles they come up with. But in between styling days there can sure be some awesome afro’s! Here’s a friend of mine going from afro to nice style.

Now here are the polar opposites to getting your hair DONE in Jamaica…..getting it undone!  These are some of my favorite pics of my friends with hair UNdone!

And this next one is my all time favorite picture of hair brushed out.  This friend of mine actually gets a new braided style about every 4 or 5 days!  I kinda like this look on him though!  It’s more fun….less serious.  He has nicer hair than some females I know!

Merry Jamaican Christmas!

Thursday, December 24th, 2009 | Author: JC

Since it is the season, I thought I’d just provide you with some great info on Jamaican Christmas tradition.

AJC

“Jonkanoo or John Canoe, is a traditional Christmas celebration in which revelers parade through the streets dressed in colorful masquerade. It was the major celebration for the slaves. The parade and festivities probably arrived with African slaves who were brought to Jamaica. Not as popular in the cities as it was 30 years ago, Jonkanoo is still a tradition in rural Jamaica.

Traditionally, the characters are played by men wearing white mesh masks. The Jonkanoo characters include the horned Cow Head, Policeman, Horse Head, Wild Indian, Devil, Belly-Woman, Pitchy-Patchy and sometimes a Bride and House Head, which was an image of a great house carried by the reveler on his head.

Although Jamaica is credited with the longest running tradition of Jonkanoo, today these mysterious bands with their gigantic costumes appear more as entertainment at cultural events than at random along the streets. “

Sangster Airport – Montego Bay

Monday, December 21st, 2009 | Author: JC

A friend of mine found this video on Youtube and she posted it for me asking “how does this video make you feel?”

After watching it I felt sick in my stomach! I’ve flown in and out of this airport nine times out of ten trips (so far) and it’s impossible to describe the feelings associated with it! When arriving in Jamaica the intense feelings of joy and butterflies in my stomach are overwhelming. When leaving, the heaviest feelings of sadness and sorrow overtake me.

This is a fabulous video and once you go, YOU WILL KNOW!
