Galina Lighthouse – St Mary, Jamaica

Monday, March 08th, 2010 | Author: JC

Ever since I found out on a friend’s website, KEEP IT JIGGY, about another lighthouse in Jamaica I made it my mission to find it when I got to St Mary two weeks ago. I’m obsessed with lighthouses, I just find them so intriguing!

Let me tell you it was no easy feat….it seemed no one knew where it was! We left it up to a route taxi driver to ask around and finally he found the way. I didn’t regret it and I got the perfect stormy day to photograph it!

Once we got in here I understood why it was so hard to find, the drive in through thick bush and a residential community wasn’t what I expected. I found this aerial picture online of the land surrounding the lighthouse, and before that long stretch of road to the lighthouse is where the bush and community are.

Like I said, the day I chose to find this place was spectacular….windy, stormy and ominous. The water crashed up on the rocks in front of the lighthouse and you wouldn’t believe how many tries it took for me to catch a decent shot! This one isn’t even close to the best wave crash I saw.

The surroundings of the lighthouse were just as beautiful as the structure itself. In addition to the wide open space of rock surrounding it, this stone wall was built up around the area. I love the look of the wall.

If you’re ever in the parish of St Mary on Jamaica’s north coast, DO ask around til you find out where this lighthouse is! And here’s me doing what I do best….taking in the breathtaking scenery of Jamaica with camera in hand!

Bathing in Milford Falls

Friday, March 05th, 2010 | Author: JC

The EARLY morning my rasta friend Demus came knocking on my door I felt like knocking him out! He showed up with a coffee in his hand and said “GET UP, we’re going to bathe in the river!” That sounded so unappealing to me this early but I put on my swimsuit and grabbed my towel. He advised me to bring my shampoo too.

When we got up the hill I realized I’d been to this spot before….Milford Falls! CLICK HERE to read my first post on it. I was shocked to see it in the daytime, I’d missed ALL of this at my nighttime viewing!

The early morning was very cool so I was a little wary about stripping down and getting under the water but I so wanted to do this! Demus took my camera and did pictures of me shampooing in the falls. This was the most refreshing experience of my life!!

Here is some video he took of me and the surrounding area. Beautiful place! And several locals came up here to bathe while I was there too, I guess it’s just what they do in this area. Don’t mind the talking on the video, Demus was on his phone at the same time LOL.

If anyone is in the Ocho Rios area and would really like to experience this I’m totally sure Demus could take you up there. Let me know and I’ll get ahold of him.

Olympic Hockey in Jamaica

Tuesday, March 02nd, 2010 | Author: JC

Hey everyone! I’m back! And I just had to post this while it’s still relevant since the Olympics just ended. Everyone knows that hockey is a religion in Canada so I needed to find a place to watch the gold medal game while in Jamaica.

This was so fun because I had met up with my girls at this little bar at fisherman’s beach in Ocho Rios. Three of us are Canadian and one is American and we all managed to force the bar owner to find the Olympics at 3pm for the big game! Imagine watching winter olympic hockey in a spot like this! It was great!

This day was so much fun. The Jamaicans all hung around even though they don’t understand hockey at all, but I think our excitement for the game made them stay. We tried explaining it as best we could. At one point early in the game we acquired two more Canadians who were walking around looking for a place to watch the game too. Turns out they’re from my hometown!

It was a fabulous game and as you all know, Canada took the gold medal. I can’t think of anywhere else I would have rather watched it, except maybe with my son. There you have it….winter olympics in Jamaica!
