Some of my readers have asked me to make sure I take note of local places I’ve eaten and bring back the stories so here’s a great little place to stop. It’s called High Hopes and it’s located right on the main highway between Montego Bay and Discovery Bay – closer to Montego Bay. It’ll be on your left hand side while driving east. High Hopes Restaurant This was a spur of the moment place we just picked because we were starving after our flight. The location is...

If Jamaica is famous for anything it’s the Rum – Appleton Estate, which is my personal favorite and Wray & Nephew overproof which I can’t be within 10 feet of! Jamaica also has a rich history of piracy dating back to the 1600’s. It’s WELL worth googling and learning about, you might be surprised! Posing with a pirate outside casino in Ocho Rios For me, the two (rum and pirates) go hand in hand. It all started back in February when my friend and I consumed too...

No matter where you go in Jamaica there will ALWAYS be someone on the side of the road selling beverages. Yes you’ll even find them on deserted roadways because someone will always stop in for a drink!   This girl has her drink stop set up right in front of her house, guess she doesn’t have to go far for work! Roadside drink stop We actually stayed and chilled out at her place a while, she also had a little wooden table set up off to the side and a big orange, homemade tire lounge chair...

Over the years I’ve been listening to one of my best friends rave about this place non-stop! We just happened to be in Jamaica together in February so she made it her mission to take me there before I left the island. We went on my last morning before heading to the airport. Merle's Fish Joint - White River, Jamaica   The place is called Merle’s Fish Joint and it’s right at White River, near the end of the raft ride mentioned HERE.  If I had known about it on rafting day it...

So….does this look appetizing to you? Boiled green banana, saltfish and dumpling Boiled green banana is another staple in the Jamaican diet, mostly for breakfast and usually served with saltfish and dumpling. That picture is a meal someone cooked us for breakfast. My mom took the picture and this was pretty much her first meal in Jamaica. She said the bananas looked like unhealthy sausage links LOL. But she was a trooper and tried it all anyways and loved it. Green banana in a pot The first...

The first time I saw any advertisements for this stuff was in September 2009. Of course I wondered what it would taste like so I bought some. My first thought is that it MUST be similar to Magnum, another Jamaican wine concoction, because of the size of the bottle and the hot girl on the label. Magnum, they say, makes you horny for lack of a better word. I don’t know why they say that because it just makes me tired….it’s alcohol! Jamaican Power Wine I have to laugh at the signs...

In ten trips to Jamaica this was honestly the first time I ever saw a vendor weigh their produce before they sell it. I guess I haven’t been shopping at the right places. My friend took this picture since she was sitting in the front seat of our parked car in St Ann’s Bay. This guy was just on the roadside with his scale, selling his yam. The reason this picture is so entertaining for me is because of the scale. I think it’s awesome! I STILL say simplicity rules! Makes our...
