Jamaican School Kids Singing

Sunday, January 03rd, 2010 | Author: JC

Not much to say about this video except that it’s one of my favorite ones I ever took!

I went to the library in Ocho Rios one day and these kids were just playing and singing in the yard right beside the library.  I pulled out my camera and they didn’t seem to mind!  You will see and hear this a lot in Jamaica….school kids singing these kinds of songs.  It’s so pleasant to hear and fun to watch.

The tiny girl in the middle makes me laugh!

Crazy Afros in Jamaica

Sunday, December 27th, 2009 | Author: JC

Once again I was going through lots of old pictures I have and found these ones that make me laugh.

In Jamaica and with black people in general, I notice how meticulous they are with their hairstyles. I think it’s awesome some of the wicked styles they come up with. But in between styling days there can sure be some awesome afro’s! Here’s a friend of mine going from afro to nice style.

Now here are the polar opposites to getting your hair DONE in Jamaica…..getting it undone!  These are some of my favorite pics of my friends with hair UNdone!

And this next one is my all time favorite picture of hair brushed out.  This friend of mine actually gets a new braided style about every 4 or 5 days!  I kinda like this look on him though!  It’s more fun….less serious.  He has nicer hair than some females I know!

Jamaican Roadside Bar – Steaka-Ville

Tuesday, November 10th, 2009 | Author: JC

On our way back from Nine Mile we decided to stop at a friend’s roadside bar in Coultart, near Claremont in the parish of St Ann. The girl I was traveling with used to live in this area and the bar was owned by her friend, nicknamed “Steaka”.

Steaka has quite the little village in this spot – there’s a little bar, a shop and several other little buildings that I didn’t know if they were in use. But every structure standing within the area was definitely Steaka’s because his tag was on ALL of them! I thought it was amusing and we quickly named the area “Steaka-Ville”.

One of the funniest things I noticed at Steaka-Ville was the bar license….it’s ACTUALLY licensed!  There are SO many establishments in Jamaica that have signs reading “Notice of intent to obtain a license” but I’ve never actually seen a real licensed place!  But in the middle of nowhere, in little old Steaka-Ville, there WAS in fact a license to serve liquor!

We hung around at Steaka’s for a while just chatting and patronizing his little shop.  Whenever we know someone in the area we like to “keep it in the family” and support their businesses.

And the scenery around this place was great!  Pure Jamaican countryside!  Way off in the distance on a hillside, he pointed out and informed us there was a pig slaughter house LOL!  When we looked over we saw a man following a pig around and knew that was the next dinner being served!
