GC Foster College – Spanish Town, Jamaica

Jamaican Sports College

While staying with friends in Spanish Town last month I had the opportunity to go on a mini-tour of GC Foster college. Since my friends only live minutes from it they offered to walk me over to see it. I’ve since read that this is one of the premier sporting colleges in the Caribbean!

This afternoon was blazing hot but if there’s something to see in Jamaica I have to go! This is how the college looks from GC Foster road, walking towards the front gate.

I’m not 100% sure that just anyone could walk through the security gates or not since I was with local friends who seemed to know the gate staff. As we walked through there’s a long walkway up to the college, passing a swimming pool that looks like it hasn’t been used in decades! Mind you, if this was full of clean water I probably would have jumped in I was so hot!

We entered the main building and unfortunately I didn’t whip out my camera and start taking pictures. There were classes in session and people in the halls. I’ll only go so far to look like a tourist LOL!! It was SOO nice and cool inside with the A/C and right inside the main lobby I saw an ATM. That was handy since I needed money anyways.

Here are a couple more pics from the college grounds.

I don’t know a whole lot about GC Foster College but have browsed their website since returning. I did learn that world famous Asafa Powell and Usain Bolt have both competed in track and field events here. Cool…walking on the same ground as them.

Here’s the GC FOSTER WEBSITE if you’re interested in learning more!

St John’s Preparatory School – Ocho Rios

Ocho Rios School

I couldn’t resist hanging around this school since it’s right beside Little Shaw Park guest house, where I’ve stayed a few times. Every morning at the guest house I wake up to the sound of singing or playing children. Unfortunately we weren’t allowed inside the gates to tour the inside of the school during class time so here are the shots I got of the school exterior.

A lot of Jamaica’s history and culture is displayed on the outside of schools, which is great because it even teaches travelers as well as the children! This next picture shows the 3 counties of Jamaica; Surrey, Cornwall and Middlesex. The other areas on the map are the various parishes, which have evolved into these current ones over the decades.

Jamaica also has several national symbols. I’m not going to explain them all….this will give you something to Google. My favorite is the coat of arms though, because it displays Jamaica’s national motto: Out Of Many, One People. If only everyone lived by that motto.

And last in this post, but certainly not least are Jamaica’s national hero’s! If you’ve done any research at all on Jamaica you probably recognize at least Norman Manley since Kingston’s airport is named after him, and so is the longest road through Negril. To save you the Google for the rest of them, CLICK HEREfor a fabulous page of information about each of them.

I promise to bring back more pictures of schools next month. I’m leaving for the island again in a couple weeks! Stay tuned………..
