Cell Phones in Jamaica

I’m doing this post for a friend of mine who I know through a Jamaican chat forum.  It might help her business and it will definitely help you if you plan to rent a cell phone in Jamaica.

Jodi and Oniel Daley run a cell phone rental business out of Negril, called Rentacell Negril,  and make it really convenient for anyone to have their own phone while on vacation in Jamaica.  All phones are delivered and picked up for FREE to you and have pre-assigned phone numbers before your arrival.

All incoming calls are free and they also have phones with unlimited international calling for one flat fee, so you can be in touch with home while vacationing.

You can get in touch with them by email at rentacellnegril@yahoo.com OR by calling:  1-876-473-4689 or 1-718-208-6596. If they don’t respond to your email within 48 hours just give them a call because they’re probably in an area without email access at that time.

    Hi,

Since you have a lot of experience in Jamaica and I thinking about going there very soon, I was wondering if you could tell me how much it usually costs to use the internet (in a cafe, or get access to wireless with a laptop) and how much it costs to make international calls to Canada and/or Europe (again, in a calling shop, or using a local cell phone). I have tried to find this information online, but it seems hard to come by. I would appreciate any information that you may have on this topic.

    Thanks,
    Sarah

Hi Sarah, I’ll answer as best as I can. For the internet there’s a few different options. First if you have a laptop, depending on where you are you might be able to just tap into a wireless network if you right in a town. For example in Ocho Rios there’s a central park in town where you can pick up several wireless networks. If you do go to an internet cafe don’t go to a hotel one, they’re really expensive. Ask around to find one right in a town and you’ll pay a lot less. Its not very much, I’ve never spent more than about $500 JMD (around $7 USD) for up to an hour.

I don’t think there are “calling shops” in Jamaica. Again you have a few different options. You can rent or buy a local cell phone for really cheap. And the local network Digicel has an international calling plan. For $1000 JMD (approx $15 CAD) you get 1000 minutes of international calling to Canada, USA, Europe. The alternative to a local cell phone is calling cards but I’ve never used them so I can’t advise. I have a Jamaican cell phone.

Hope this helps. Any more questions?

This past April, a group of us left Toronto on a mission trip to Southfield, St. Elizabeth. Our first eight days on the island was extremely busy, and so the pictures in this report are of the two days we had to ourselves, plus some from the week I spent in Kingston. On the morning of the trip, I was extremely tired. I had end of semester exams the previous night and so didn’t finished packing until about 3:00 a.m. When my ride came at 6:30, I was looking forward to a nap on the plane, but of course, I came face to face with Murphy’s Law.

We are staying at Couples San Sousci and was wondering how safe it is once you leave the resort to go downtown. I have read about the falls, I just would like to know how the locals treat you.

Rodney that’s the whole point of my blog, is to promote people to get out and mix with the people. The locals are the BEST! It’s totally fine and safe to leave your hotel and get out to do things. I HIGHLY recommend it. If you have any questions feel free to ask me. :-)
