What to Expect From a Jamaican Butler

What to do With a Butler at a Jamaican Resort

As you may or may not know, back in May my awesome travel agent friend scored us a few nights at two different Sandals Resorts in Jamaica. She’s used to traveling this way, I’m not. You ALL know that resorts just aren’t my thing but I was excited to accompany her and try the resort thing MY way so I created a new category (Jamaica Resorts) on this blog to highlight some of my misbehavior at these places.

During our stay at one resort in Montego Bay we were unexpectedly upgraded to a butler suite which meant that we would have round the clock butler service; one in the daytime and one at night. Our daytime butler was amazing and made the BEST soursop juice on the planet and hand delivered it to us in the morning. He also took us to church after we checked out of the resort. You may remember him from my “Church in Jamaica” blog post.

Our two butlers work as a team and upon our check-in we were given a cell phone that was a direct dial to them any time we needed to reach them. We quickly named it the “but-phone” – we thought it was funny. We also thought it was funny how they would call us in the morning and tell us our beach chairs were reserved for the day. Sure enough, there were beach chairs with rolled up towels and an actual sign with our names on it, reserving those two loungers for us. And as soon as we took up occupancy on those chairs it was like the butler appeared out of nowhere with two ready made blender drinks on a tray. It was like he was hiding behind a tree waiting for us to show up.

Basically we felt a little awkward having butlers because we didn’t really know what to do with them so we’d make up lame reasons to call them. One night we used the but-phone to request a walk to dinner in a different area of the resort. Of course he was glad to walk arm-in-arm with two ladies, considering this resort is COUPLES ONLY and he’d never get this chance otherwise. And speaking of the “couples only” situation there are NO options for a room with two beds because it’s a couples resort. I remember we spent a considerable amount of time explaining to random people that we aren’t lesbians LOL. We felt the need to tell to everyone that we’re in the travel industry and just trying the resort out but there are no rooms with two beds.

Our accompaniment to dinner with our butler.

Below is a spur of the moment video we did the night we came back from the dinner we were headed to in the above picture. Our butler obviously knew we were out of the room for a while because he escorted us and the video shows what he did while we were gone. I have to say our mood swings upon entering the room went from shocked to surprised to downright laughter in 3 seconds flat. And conveniently – our but-phone rang right after our discovery. He must have been hiding behind that tree again. Stalker!

Tanya, there actually IS a butler school! I’m going to edit the post and put in a photo of the logo on his shirt. You’ll see they come from the Guild of Professional English Butlers. Pretty amazing.

And I was supposed to do a towel animal making lesson on film with one of them but we just ran out of time somehow. Boooo!
