When I was a little girl the very old people used them to cook on and also used them to use to heat real irons in order to iron their cloths but that was decades ago. I did not know that they were still around. At least, if there is no gas or electricity there is something to fall back on. I believe the earlier barbecue grills were invented as a result of the coal pots. It is the same idea - coals and fire. Coal pot, that is what we called the stove that is being cooked on.
