40 Legs in Jamaica

40 Legs in Jamaica

Hey everyone, I’m still in Jamaica and was inspired to post this because it’s UGLY as hell!!

I’ve always heard about “Forty Legs” in Jamaica – basically they’re a giant centipede and when I say giant…..I mean it!  I’m on my 14th trip right now and have never had the pleasure of visiting with a Forty-Leg til now.  I used to get jealous when I heard that first-time or second-time travelers had encountered them and I hadn’t yet.

I was sitting in my apartment one night with a friend of mine and we were just chatting when his eyes moved past me and got wide. The next word that came out of his mouth was “Bumboclaat!!” and I thought I’d turn around to just see a roach or something. When I turned around I jumped off the couch faster than if it were on fire and ran!!

My friend was wearing boots so he put his foot on top of the Forty Leg to keep it from disappearing. I was jumping around in hysterics yelling for him to kill it but then I yelled “WAIT let me get my camera!”. I’ve never seen one before and who knows when I’ll see another one so had to take the opportunity before it got squashed. This one was about 6 inches long and moved FAST! That just added to the disgusting factor.

After I took the picture he stomped on it but the damn thing wouldn’t die….at all. It just kept squirming so we swept it outside and into the bushes.

So that was my Forty Leg experience. Just thought you all should know LOL!

  1. Oh my gosh! What a scary looking insect!!!! I’d have had a stroke there n’ then…I’ve come across the black worms whilst in JA, and thought they were bad enough. I guess the speed at which they move does add to the uuuuuuuurgh! factor.

  19. Was sleeping one night on a greek island small house, one month ago. Got up around 3 in the morning having the impression something was walking on my arm. I searched the whole bed and blanket with a lamp, could find nothing.
    Went back to sleep. At 4, again woke up. Again something tickled my arm just a bit; Again searched. This time was sure I didn’t dream it. After looking without success for some time, got out of bed and threw the lamp light on the blanket… Suddenly I saw its tail, hiding from the light.

    It was in the bed for at least one hour;
    It was very big. Much bigger than the photo you post; Like 8 inches or more;
    It was very hard to kill.
    But it didn’t bite me. I still don’t understand what it was doing there;

  22. i’m pretty sure the smaller version are just centipedes. We have them in Canada too, I think they’re everywhere.

  24. we DO NOT have these types of 40 legs in canada. our centipedes first of all do not bite, but also do not have venom like the jamaican 40-legs.

  27. UGH Teri! that sucks!! I hope you’re feeling better soon! I know after I saw this one I was scared to go in my bed too. Every night I would flip up the sheets and search the whole bed before getting into it just in case something was hiding in the sheets LOL.
