Hurricanes and Jerk Centers in Jamaica
This is a quickie to update you all on my arrival after hurricane Sandy hit Jamaica.
This morning I had nothing to do so I set out on the road to find somewhere to eat that isn’t where I’d normally go. I headed towards St Mary and stopped at Tower Jerk Restaurant & Bar in Tower Isle. This post isn’t only about the food but also about what I saw on the road on the way. It seems the further east I go, the worse the storm damage. Makes sense, that’s always the way it goes here it seems.
Here’s what the main highway was like moving east from Ocho Rios into St Mary. Lots of huge broken down trees, signs blown over, and tons of crews out on the road cutting the trees into pieces and removing them. Sorry some of the pics are blurry, I was driving while taking them. I wanted to pull over and really get some good ones but there’s just nowhere to pull over that doesn’t have debris swept into piles on the side of the road.
I did see a lot more damage, like light posts on the ground just outside Ocho Rios but it was hard to get pictures. I will be updating with new posts as I see things.
Meanwhile, I had fried chicken for brunch at the jerk restaurant which left a lot to be desired. It doesn’t even make my list of awesome fried chicken around the island. I’m not going to say never go visit the place because almost everywhere I’ve eaten or drank since I arrived is running on generators so I have to be forgiving. Looks good though huh? I paid $550jmd for this dish and a cranberry wata.
And how can anyone complain about eating anything when you’re right across the street from the beautiful sea?
Stay tuned for more blog posts on the storm damage and OF COURSE, more awesome stuff I’m doing! My rental car, my first hotel nights in a new place and much more whenever I have internet.
MUCH LOVE AND RESPECT to the people of Jamaica who are full of vibes in spite of the storm and it’s damages. We are still partying by candlelight and car stereo sound!
